Zombie Games Preview

It’s no secret that Hamsterfist loves Zombies. Zombie movies, zombie books and zombie games, I can’t get enough. But how much is too much of a good thing? Well if the product is good, there is no such thing as too much. However there is gluttony of Zombie games heading towards the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC and I doubt very much all will be good. Here is a small sample of upcoming zombie games, divided in two different groups. Those that might not be good or even end up getting made and those that are going to be blockbusters or have at least some excitement behind them.
The Littles

Fort Zombie
Platform: PC
Release: Q4 2009
Fort Zombie is a small digital distribution release for the PC. You are to defend a small town in Indiana and Fort Zombie will play like a casual RPG. As the title implies, you will be charged with creating a fort and defending it through upgrades. Today at PAX it was announced it would retail for $14.95.
Zombie Massacre
Platform: Wii
Release: TBA
This is yet another on-rail shooter for the Wii, but with a mix. You will also be tasked with driving a nuclear bomb into the center of the zombie infested city. Zombie Massacre is being developed by a small studio, 1988 Games, and was announced in 2007. I was unable to find any screen shots, and believe for the most part this is vapor-ware.

They Hunger: Lost Souls
Platform: PC
Release: TBA
They Hunger is a game powered by Half-Life 2’s source engine (which at this point is starting to look a little tired) and is based on the mod series of the same name. You will be tasked with stopping the zombies in 1960’s Europe and the game mostly revolves around holding up in a monestary.

Zombie Tycoon
Platform: PSP, PC
Release: Q4 2009
This is a very strange sounding title. And guess what, it is exactly what you would guess. That is right, a tycoon game, but you are managing your zombie horde. Your ultimate goal is to control your zombies and destroy the city. I have to admit it sounds fun, and if it scores high enough on reviews I might consider purchasing this one.
The Bigs

Possession
Platform: PS3, 360, PC
Release: TBA
Ok in all fairness this is probably vapor-ware. It was announced two years ago, and their webiste domain has now been taken over by something different. But it sounded really cool. You are a smart zombie (Think Land of the Dead) who must use the other zombies to get revenge on the evil corporation that did this to you. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Too bad this one is probably dead. Though not offically yet, that is why it made the list.

Dead Island
Platform: PS3, 360, PC
Release: TBA (Maybe 2009)
From the developers of Call of Juarez comes another first person shooter. Can you guess what the premise is? That is right; you are on an island and must defeat the dead. Bet you never saw that one coming, did you? This one should be on your radar as the developers are decent. But one to probably wait for the reviews for. The images look fantastic and might also convince you to remember this one. (Gamespot screenshots.)

Zombie Apocalypse
Platform: PS3, 360
Release: Any fuckin’ day now
A Geometry Wars style twin stick shooter, but with zombies. Zombie Zpocalypse is an isometric shooter and the ‘levels’ are broken up into days. You will collect power ups, and take it to the zombie in all kind of crazy, rakin’ up scores ways. It is being developed by Konami and is set to launch any day. (I think maybe next week, they keep teasing us on this one.)

Dead Rising 2
Platform: PS3, 360, PC
Release: Q4 2009
The most surprising thing about this title is that it is coming to the PS3. Dead Rising was once a 360 exclusive, developed by Capcom. Now eveyone gets to enjoy the zombie killing fun. This time Dead Rising 2 is set in ‘Vegas’ and you will play a stunt man. Along with the whole stunt man thing, you can outfit your vehicles with all sorts of crazy weapons. (Look at the screen shot above. Now picture that with chainsaws on both handle bars.) Hopefully they fixed the save system for the sequel.
Dead Nation
Platform: PS3
Release: Sometime 2010
Somewhat similar to Zombie Apocalypse above, this again is an isometric zombie dual stick shooter. Only with local supported co-op, and the hope that the developers add online co-op. Honestly the trailer for this game looks absolutely gorgeous, and the hope is definitely there that this one will be a hit. Oh, and it is being developed by the same people that made Super Stardust HD. You know, someone that might know a thing or two about shooters.

Left 4 Dead 2
Platform: 360, PC
Release: November 17, 2009
Anyone that does not know about this game has no pulse themselves. This is the sure fire, blockbuster sequel to Valve’s original hit. Only now the survivors are in Lousiana and have melee weapons. Flaiming ammo, and new ‘boss’ zombies. It is no secret that I loved the original and right now I get a hard on just thinking about this one. I might take that whole week off of work.
